This plot presents a modest but significant collection of autochthonous and domesticated fruit varieties of selected fruit species traditionally grown in the moderately continental climate of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Through long-term cultivation and adaptation to local environmental conditions, these varieties have developed distinctive biological, economic, and cultural characteristics. As such, they represent valuable plant genetic resources of general national interest. In addition to their agricultural value, indigenous and naturalized fruit varieties form an important part of local tradition, identity, and cultural heritage.<\/p>\n
Autochthonous varieties refer to genotypes that have been cultivated since ancient times under specific environmental conditions, whose exact origin and denomination cannot be determined with certainty.<\/p>\n
Domesticated varieties have a known origin and name but, through long-term cultivation and dissemination within a particular region, have become an integral part of local fruit-growing traditions.<\/p>\n
Autochthonous fruit varieties developed gradually over time through adaptation, selection, and cultivation<\/strong>. In addition to varieties originating in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the wider region, many varieties now regarded as autochthonous arrived during the Ottoman and Austro-Hungarian periods. This is reflected in cultivar names of Turkish origin, such as pear cultivars Karamut<\/em> (kara \u2013 black, armut \u2013 pear) and Jeribasma<\/em> (yer basmak \u2013 to press the ground), as well as apple cultivars \u0160e\u0107erlija<\/em> (\u015feker \u2013 sugar) and \u0110ulabija<\/em> (g\u00fcl \u2013 rose).<\/p>\n Nevertheless, the majority of variety names are in the local language. Names were assigned based on various criteria, such as:<\/p>\n A particular characteristic of autochthonous cultivars is the large number of synonyms, which vary from place to place; however, in most cases, the name retains a recognizable root word.<\/p>\n Although fruit cultivation in Bosnia and Herzegovina has a long-standing tradition, its professional and scientifically grounded development began in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, during the Austro-Hungarian administration. At that time, the majority of the population was engaged in agriculture, and the authorities, aiming to increase yields and improve production quality, began introducing modern working methods and new fruit varieties<\/p>\n The establishment of agricultural and specialized fruit and viticulture stations, along with fruit nurseries, marked a major turning point in this process. In these institutions, farmers were introduced to grafting techniques, the cultivation of high-quality seedlings, and rational soil management. By 1908, a total of ten specialized fruit-growing and viticulture stations were operating in Bosnia and Herzegovina. However, after an evaluation of their work, only four continued operating during that period\u2014located in Donji Hrgovi near Grada\u010dac, Gora\u017ede, Konjic, and Gacko<\/p>\n These stations laid the foundations of modern fruit cultivation in Bosnia and Herzegovina, marking the transition from traditional practices to planned and market-oriented production.<\/p>\n The text on descriptions of fruit varieties was prepared by Assoc.
