Geological Past of Bosnia and Herzegovina
This permanent exhibition in the Natural Sciences Pavilion shows the development and diversity of flora and fauna of the area of Bosnia and Herzegovina in the geological past.
The Tree of Evolution shows the geochronological development and extinction of major groups of plants and animals.
The exhibit Scenes from the Evolution of Land, Sea, and Life on Earth shows a few examples of the distribution of land and water from the genesis of the first Precambrian shields to the Pleistocene, while The Structure of the Earth shows the spherical shape of the Earth and how it is made up of rock diverse in composition and unit weight.
Displayed are the basic types of rock, with the sedimentaries spotlighted, because they contain fossils, the remains of organisms from the geological past. In Bosnia and Herzegovina, sediments have been found from the Paleozoic (600–225 million years ago), the Mesozoic (225–70 million years ago), and the Caenozoic (70 million years ago).
The displayed fossils were found in different parts of the country: Banja Luka, Derventa, Breza, Doboj, Kakanj, Zenica, Trebižat, Han-Bulog, Volujak, Trebević, Ljubija, Bileća, and others.
