Herbarium
The Herbarium scientific collection was founded in 1980 and is organized according to the standardized Engler system. Contains dessicates of vascular plants – ferns, gymnosperms and crypts. The herbarium of the National Museum of Bosnia and Herzegovina is the only official herbarium in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Its value is internationally recognized, and it is registered in the world herbarium index (Index Herbariorum), under the name SARA (Sarajevo). It consists of 5 parts:
The Bosnian-Herzegovinian collection – about 55,000, the general collection – about 60,000, the Otto Blau collection – 2,503 specimens, the Erich Brandis collection – 13,013 and the type collection – 392 specimens. The herbarium collection is continuously enriched thanks to donations from researchers and botanists.
The Erich Brandis collection is an older large botanical collection that served as one of the bases for establishing the Herbarium. In addition to these collections, the botanical department also contains collections of mosses, lichens, and doublets of vascular plants, which are kept in a special botanical depot.
