The Botanical Garden
The Botanical Garden of the National Museum of Bosnia and Herzegovina was founded in year 1912-1913, under the guidance of botanist Karl Malý. It covers an area of 14,270 m2 and contains 12 scientific and exhibition collections. The garden has an important educational role – it informs visitors about the wealth of autochthonous flora and raises awareness of the importance of preserving biodiversity. Today, around 1,000 different plant species grow in the garden.
The special value of the Botanical Garden consists of thematically arranged rock gardens, divided according to geological foundations. These are: Flora on schist, Flora on serpentine, Flora on dolomite, Flora on limestone, Flora of the Herzegovinian endemic center, Flora of the canyon and Flora of the sub-Mediterranean.
Historically, the Botanic Garden has been part of the global seed exchange community, collaborating with more than 300 botanic gardens around the world. The first edition of Index seminum was published in 1927, with 148 plant species, while in 1990 it reached its peak with as many as 825 of them on offer. During the war (1992-1995), publication of the Index seminum was suspended. Today, we are actively working to re-establish the seed bank and continue publishing this important catalog.
