The World of Aquatic and Wetland Habitats

The skeleton of a duck-billed whale, specimens of a great white shark, a Mediterranean monk seal, a turtle and an otter are some of the most attractive exhibits in the new permanent exhibition “The World of Aquatic and Wetland Habitats”.

This is one of the oldest and most popular exhibits in the National Museum of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The exhibition displays more than a hundred animal species, including about 50 species of freshwater and marine fish, including the scraper, an endemic species that inhabits the waters of the Zrmanja, Krka, Neretva and Trebišnjica rivers. It also features about 50 species of birds, some of which, such as pelicans, white storks and members of the heron, cormorant and duck families, used to be much more numerous in Bosnia and Herzegovina, but their populations are decreasing. At the center of the exhibition is a sunken ship as a symbol of habitats that are disappearing, turning into garbage dumps due to the carelessness of society. In this way, the World of Aquatic and Wetlands sends a message about the threat and disappearance of specific habitat types and biodiversity.
