Vučedol culture ceramic pot

This ceramic pot from the Hrustovača cave near Sanski Most is a product of the most distinctive Late Aeneolithic cultural phenomenon in Bosnia and Herzegovina – the Vučedol culture, which, in its late phase, spread into central Bosnia along the valleys of the Una and Sana rivers.

The Vučedol culture is characterised by a unique system of ceramic ornamentation, which is divided into two regional types: the western Bosnian or Hrustovača type, and the southern Bosnian or Debelo Brdo type. The stylistic features of the ceramic findings include a specific manner of decoration and the use of techniques such as scoring, branding, and grooving of geometric patterns (triangles, rhombs, squares, circles) or simple linear patterns (zig-zags or straight lines), as well as the use of white incrustation, the most recognisable feature of the Vučedol culture ceramics industry.
