Cave fauna

The permanent exhibition at the Department of Natural Sciences provides an insight into the animal world that characterizes caves as a type of habitat with specific ecological conditions: increased humidity, darkness, small temperature differences during the year, etc. Animals that inhabit caves have adaptation mechanisms to these specific living conditions: absence or complete atrophy of the sense of sight, absence of pigment, highly developed sense of touch.

As there are a large number of caves in Bosnia and Herzegovina, the diversity of fauna in them is very high. One of the most famous and richest caves in Bosnia and Herzegovina is Vjetrenica in Popovo polje. More than 100 animal species have been recorded in it, including 35 species of troglobiotes, which were found for the first time in Vjetrenica. The exhibition reconstructs the ambiance of a cave, and in addition, typical examples of certain species are also exhibited, such as the famous manfish (Proteus anguinus).
