March in the National Museum of Bosnia and Herzegovina
During March, the National Museum of Bosnia and Herzegovina and the National and University Library of Bosnia and Herzegovina are implementing a series of joint activities with the support of the Government of the United Kingdom. The programme includes workshops, an exhibition and a concert that open up different ways for the audience to encounter cultural heritage – through practical work, new knowledge and shared experience.
Through this cooperation between the two state institutions, additional attention is being drawn to the importance of their work and the role they play in preserving, researching and presenting the heritage of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The programme is also an invitation to the public to experience the Museum as an open space for knowledge, encounters and active participation in cultural life.
Workshops: encounter with tradition and knowledge
The programme started on March 14 with a woodcarving workshop, held in cooperation with craftsmen from Zanati. The workshop gathered a large number of interested participants and took place in an extremely creative atmosphere. The participants had the opportunity to get acquainted with the basics of this traditional skill – from familiarisation with tools and techniques to independent carving of motifs inspired by the orchards of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The workshops organized by the Museum as part of this programme are intended for adult participants and are held in the format of closed groups, with prior registration due to the limited number of places.
The workshop “Let’s get to know Bosančica – old Bosnian script” will take place on Sunday, March 22, during which participants will have the opportunity to learn about the historical script used in Bosnia and Herzegovina from the 16th to the 19th century. Through practical work and expert guidance, participants will explore the significance of this script and learn how to use it themselves.
Late in March, on March 28, the Museum is organizing two workshops dedicated to preserving and understanding heritage. The Paper Conservation and Restoration Workshop: First Aid for Old Memories will introduce participants to ways in which old photographs, documents and other paper items can be protected and preserved at home, with a demonstration of a professional conservation procedure, while the Botanical Garden will host a gardening workshop that will introduce visitors to the world of plants and the practical aspects of gardening.
Exhibition: The United Kingdom in BiH periodicals
From March 23 to April 19, visitors will be able to see the exhibition “The United Kingdom in BiH periodicals: selected texts from the period 1866-1939.”
The exhibition presents a selection of texts from BiH newspapers and magazines that reveal how readers in Bosnia and Herzegovina in the late 19th and early 20th centuries got to know and understand the world beyond their borders through the press. Texts dedicated to the United Kingdom bear witness to the ways in which global political, social and cultural events entered the domestic public space and shaped representations of the modern world, but also bear witness to the interests, contacts and intellectual ties that connected Bosnia and Herzegovina and the United Kingdom in that period.
Sevdah in the garden
The programme of the month will be rounded off by the Sevdah in the Garden concert, which will be held on March 29 in the Botanical Garden of the National Museum of BiH. Along with the concert, a presentation of local fruit products will be organized.
The event is part of activities related to the revitalisation of the plot dedicated to autochthonous and domesticated varieties of selected fruit species in the garden, through which the Museum seeks to draw attention to the tradition of fruit growing in Bosnia and Herzegovina and its importance in everyday life, art and nutrition.
