Bosnia and Herzegovina’s mires mushrooms documentary film premiere and book promotion at the National Museum of Bosnia and Herzegovina

On Saturday, 07.12.2024. starting at 5:00 p.m., the premiere of the documentary film and the promotion of the book about the mushrooms of mires will be held in the National Museum of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The Mycological Society MycoBH is pleased to announce the premiere of a new documentary film – “The Empire of Fungi in the Empire of Moss” and the promotion of the book “Diversity of Fungi in Mires in Bosnia and Herzegovina”. The new publication of the Mycological Society MycoBH and the exciting short documentary take us through the amazing world of fungi that inhabit mires throughout Bosnia and Herzegovina. Mires in Bosnia and Herzegovina are uncommon. These rare ecosystems occupy small areas and represent one of the most sensitive habitats. Today, we encounter them primarily in mountainous regions in the form of fragmented remains from the post-glacial era, and they are characterized by the presence of mosses from the genus Sphagnum.

The vegetation that prevails in these ecosystems creates an atmosphere reminiscent of the far northern wilderness, making each visit to the mires feel as if we are traveling back in time. Mires themselves are fascinating ecosystems - constantly wet and acidic, with low levels of oxygen and nutrients. This harsh environment presents unique challenges, and the documentary film and book show the mushroom species that have developed exceptional adaptive abilities to survive in such demanding conditions. Also, in the publication, as well as in the film, rare and important types of mushrooms are highlighted on a regional, European and even global level. The book and the documentary film are part of the project "Mires of Bosnia and Herzegovina: important and fragile habitat types and refuges for boreal and circumboreal fungal species", which was supported by the Rufford Foundation from London.

The project was also supported by the Sarajevo Cantonal Public Institution for Protected Natural Areas and the National Museum of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

All visitors will receive a free copy of the book "Diversity of Fungi in Mires in Bosnia and Herzegovina".
