Jewellery box

  • Odjeljenje za etnologiju, kutija za nakit, 19. stoljeće, 19. vijek, filigran

Section:

This is a silver box made using the filigree technique – a very delicate and demanding method of working silver or gold wire into different shapes. The art of filigree was practised by master goldsmiths and silversmiths specialised in filigree work. Jewellery and other items made using this technique were in demand, thus many goldsmiths and silversmiths branched out into filigree.

The box has handles and a latch at the front. The box itself is ornamented with rosettes running along all the edges. The lower edge and the handles are gilded. The box was used for the safekeeping of jewellery and other valuables, but might also have served as a decorative piece, displayed as proof of its owners' wealth and standing.
