Woman’s cap with tepeluk plate

This woman’s headpiece is made up of several parts. Each part was made by a different artisan, and they were finally put together by a milliner specialising in fezzes and women’s headwear.

The cap has the shape of a shallow fez; it is made of black felt, and the front part extends lower than the back part. The cap is bordered all around with a fringe of black silk yarn, shorter towards the front, almost shoulder-length at the back. There is no fringe at the frontmost forehead part, which is decorated with three gilded Turkish coins. The cap is trimmed with a violet ribbon tied into a bow at the back, and it has a round tepeluk plate at the top. The tepeluk plate is decorated with goldwork and very fine pearlwork in a pattern of twigs arranged in a circle around a central pearl rosette. 

This headpiece was a part of the urban Bosniac woman’s costume. Like many other exquisite garments, it reflected the owner's social status.
