YAKISHIME – Earth Metamorphosis
The National Museum of Bosnia and Herzegovina cordially invites you to the opening of the new exhibition, YAKISHIME – Earth Metamorphosis, on Friday, 10th of May 2019 at 2 p.m.
This exhibition introduces yakishime ceramics which developed in Japan in distinctive directions, as part of Japanese traditional culture. It explores the history of yakishime, from its origins to the present, its use in tea wears and utensils for serving food, and its emergence as objects d'art. The earliest known yakishime wares date from the 4th or 5th century. However, only in the period from 12th to 17th century the technique was firmly established and used as a substantial part of the production in major ceramic centres in Japan, including Bizen, Shigaraki and Tokoname.
YAKISHIME – Earth Metamorphosis presents functional yakishime wares of two types: utensils used in the tea ceremony, which has had a great influence on development of Japanese traditional culture, and tableware that have become an essential part of everyday life in Japan. It also presents a wide range of non-utilitarian objects created by contemporary ceramic artists working in yakishime technique.
We hope that visitors, having seen this rich presentation of yakishime wares, will become aware of the depth and diversity of Japanese culture and gain an insight into its creativity.
YAKISHIME – Earth Metamorphosis exhibition is organized by the Japan Foundation, established in 1972 with the objective of deepening international understanding through cultural exchange.
