The Dinaric karst covers the better part of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and is extremely abundant in various underground habitats, where a plethora of species live, many of them endemic. The entomological collections of the National Museum contain a large number of cave-dwelling species of Bosnia and Herzegovina, including a significant number of type specimens of cave insects.
These include Anthroherpon cylindricollis, a beetle endemic to Bosnia and Herzegovina, first discovered in a cave near the village of Golubovići, near Rogatica, and described by Viktor Apfelbeck in the Herald of the National Museum of Bosnia and Herzegovina in 1889. In addition to the type subspecies A. c. cylindricollis, two more subspecies were subsequently described: A. c. scaphium from Mračna Pećina and A. c. thoracicum from Novakova Pećina on Mt Romanija. So far, this species of cave-dwelling beetle has been found only in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
