Kostolac culture ceramic vessel

The catchment basin of the upper and lower course of the Bosna River is the most south-westerly, peripheral distribution area of the Kostolac culture in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The most important Kostolac site is Pivnica near Odžak.
A distinct and recognisable feature of this culture is the lavish and varied decoration applied to ceramic dishes. The techniques used include grooving, stamping, pricking, pressing, and carving, with liberal application of white incrustation. As a rule, ornamental shapes such as rhombs and triangles are placed on the belly or the shoulder of a vessel and are organised in various combinations within metopes or broad strips.
